Driver's story: I crashed my 1998 Trans Am Firebird car racing on New Years Eve
Aaron says: I was racing another Trans Am (stupid, I know) when he shot over in the next lane because it was closed. The road was smaller with 3 lanes, I was in the far left lane when another transam shot over very quick and I wondered why, but found out it was because the lane was closed so I slammed on my brakes and lost control. I didn't have time to stop or get over, with my crappy tires and ABS being out, I lost control, spun through all 3 lanes of traffic and hit a telephone pole at 55MPH right on the driver's side car door.
There was about 1.5 feet between the door and the center console. The A-pillar (t-top car) was bent down so far, if I didn't sit all the way back, I would have hit it with my temple or head and been probably killed. I jumped out of the car over the door. I only had a torn muscle in my left side and cuts/bruises. Luckily, firebirds are tough cars and I was wearing a seatbelt.. Worst of all, I only had liability insurance, plus, I spent midnight on New Years eve in the hospital. The car is not repairable at all. The shifter hole under the console is crinkled to the driver's side nearly 2 inches. The unibody is destroyed. Car was totalled.
